Throughout the morning, many of the special guests spoke about the strong OLOF community, this was yet another example of what a special school we are a part of. May 8, 2012: Our Lady of Fatima Feast Day On this day in 1917, Our Lady made her first appearance to three shepherd children, Jacinta (age 7), Francisco (age 9) and Lucia (age 10), at Fatima in Portugal. The lives of the three children of Fatima were entirely transformed by the heavenly apparitions. Students from OLOF will be involved in the Rosary from 8:30 with Mass being celebrated by Bishop Joseph Oudeman at 9:00. All are invited to join us at this celebration.
April 24, 2012: Archbishop Mark Coleridge I am pleased to advise that Pope Benedict XVI has announced the appointment of Archbishop Mark Coleridge, currently Archbishop of Canberra–Goulburn, as the new Archbishop of Brisbane to succeed Archbishop John Bathersby. Archbishop Coleridge was ordained a priest from the Archdiocese of Melbourne in 1974. Following a number of years of parish ministry he studied Sacred Scripture of the Biblicum in Rome being awarded a doctorate in 1992. He then lectured in scripture at Catholic Theological College in Melbourne and was Master of the College. Archbishop Coleridge has also worked within the Secretariat of State at the Vatican and was for a time chaplain to Pope John Paul II. He was appointed an Auxiliary Bishop of Melbourne in 2002, before being appointed Archbishop of the Canberra- Goulburn Archdiocese in August 2006. Archbishop Mark will be installed as Archbishop of Brisbane on 11 May. I look forward to welcoming him to the Archdiocese and have already written to offer the support of the Catholic educational community in his new role as Archbishop of Brisbane. Please keep Archbishop Mark in your prayers during this time of transition. March 29, 2012: Celebration of Term 1 Learning My thanks are extended to our class teachers for preparing the afternoon. March 21, 2012: P&F Executive Committee I thank all parents and friends for your attendance at this meeting. An invitation is also extended to attend our community meetings on the 3rd Wednesday evening of the month at 7pm in the conference room. I’m looking forward to a great working relationship with the P&F Executive in 2012! March 15, 2012: Harmony Day - Wednesday March 21, 2012 Keep your eyes posted for a letter explaining further details of the day. Students are allowed to wear the official colour for Harmony Day (ORANGE) with casual clothes next Wednesday. Please be aware closed running shoes are required as well as shirts with sleeves. As many activities will occur outside students must also have their school hat. Tuckshop next Wednesday will only operate for session 1. A free sausage sizzle will be available during break 2. This Sunday the parish and school communities will join together to celebrate the ‘Our Lady of Fatima’ Feast Day.
Over the holiday period our new Archbishop was announced. This is a significant event for our community. I draw your attention to a statement from Mr David Hutton (Brisbane Catholic Education Executive Director) regarding this announcement:
Yesterday afternoon our classes hosted a Celebration of Learning! It was well attended by parents and families, providing an interim opportunity to monitor your child’s progress.
Harmony Day 2012 takes place next Wednesday on March 21. Its theme is: Sport – Play, Engage, Inspire! As detailed on the official
As 2012 is the National Year of Reading, a number of initiatives will be put in place at OLOF
each month to celebrate the value of reading. This week has seen the implementation of Drop
Everything and Read (DEAR) in all classrooms. It will be an opportunity for our school to have a
common reading time. Special guest readers will be circulating around the classes with their
favourite book! Reading is the greatest gift we can give to and share with our children!
During Lent many students have been looking for ways to
make the world a more peaceful and happy place. All students
have been making an effort during this time especially last
Friday when we joined together as a school to join in with
‘Clean Up Australian School’s Day”.
Yesterday we joined together for our Ash Wednesday Liturgy. Students received the ashes and were encouraged to look towards changes they could make in the coming weeks in Lent. Please take the time to talk together about your Lenten promises and how you can help others at this time.
Last Friday we celebrated our Opening Mass with the school community. Thank you to parents who were able to share this event with us. The Mass was led by our year 6/7 students and during Mass each class received a prayer candle for their classroom prayer space. Thank you 6/7 for your assistance with Mass!
